Excellent work JP.  Has the new method made things easier for you going forward?

J

Oh yeah, I reckon so - as well as fixing all the lamp issues, I think I should be able to extend the new technique to help determine the correct position and scale of future elements (reels, vfds,  dmds, leds etc).  A good day, as I was struggling a little with getting that maths working, which everything relies on to look perfectly aligned after the warp :)

Hey JP, check what Guitar has achieved with Project Amber 2.  There is a video of a cab he had draw in his 3D walkthrough.  It’s a Vogue cab.

Cool - didn't realise he'd got that far with 3D!  That was from 5 years back, so I'm guessing that project is shelved now.

I'll probably knock up a few more newer cabs when I get chance to spend time and develop a few more 3ds max skills, or try tempt one of the 3d artists I know to have a crack at a few of the good ones (like the JPM Vogue).  Plus a lot of those older ones are just simple metal tubing pieces and rounded corners, so seem like they'll be pretty simple to model:6083693972_046845af81_b.jpg

...then can always be tweaked to near exact scale later once we can get owners to take a say ~5-10 measurements with a tape measure.

Let me know if you want a copy of the last system 80 cab I made? (pre angled) and I will send you the PSD to play with.

Lovely work on these cabs.  Being involved in graphic work myself I can appreciate the time that these projects can take.  But look at the end result.  Absolutely stunning work mate ;)

Yes mate, I assume so.  I've been trying to get hold of him.  But he has been inactive for a long time.  I think he paid his respects to Chris back in September, but not seen him post for a very long time before or after.

I think he may decide to come back but out of respect for Chris he probably does not want any involvement at the moment (speculation), would be a good thing but all comes down to timing I suppose.

That’s definitely not the case, they didn’t see eye to eye at all.  Not going to post specifics here out of respect for Chris, but you will find plenty of hassle that Guitar endured by top end members.  He lost a lot of support as he didn’t seem to have a straight forward plan regarding release dates.  They came and went, then he would plan something else.   People got frustrated I think.

He was/is a gifted guy, no doubt about that,  He was a self taught programmer who emulated a fair few techs in VBasic, which I believe is quite an achievement.

I did some work with Guitar for his front end.   He stopped public dev a very long time ago now and hinted he wasn’t enjoying it, he mentioned he was focusing on hobbies he enjoyed.  Miniature railway stuff I believe.

It would be great if he came back in some capacity.  I know John Is more than capable of handling the whole project but I’m sure he would love like minded people with the right skills onboard.

I never contributed much, but I did have a VM set up that guitar and some others close to him had a go at setting up Amber for me in (I think mainly out of his own curiosity if it could be done) and spoke to him a fair bit on MSN back in the day.

Echo above though, a fair few people got pissy with him for not working on what they wanted, focusing on what they believed was low priority, plus missing release dates, lack of motivation/appreciation. I believe he just wasn't enjoying it anymore.

Would be great to get him on board with this if it ever came down to it, however I've every faith JP will get it going after I saw the work on the MFME2MAME project!

Oh for sure Slasher.  I know JP very well.  Some crazy shenanigans back in the 90’s.  This guy is a total legend and then some ;)

J

Only met him the once, guessing you must be somewhere not too far away from us then? Beer time once this pandemic is over perhaps?

Much appreciated :) They are very good, as A:E says - must've been a lot of work.

Once I've got everything basically working with the arcade (which will be certainly in the realm of months), I was wanting to circle back and look at this sort of stuff.  I think it'd be possible to take a 'pre-angled' image like yours above (or potentially a high res angled photo), and write something to map that back to a 3d layout, and autolamp, using the existing layout for reference lamp brightness etc.  Purely as an alternative to AI upscaling... but to be fair these are all 'side quests' ;)

I'd be very grateful to take a copy of those files now, and thanks again for the offer :) ...but it may be a number of months before I'm onto looking at retro-fitting layouts with higher resolution images.  I think it'll mainly be appreciated for VR, where one could lean into the machine to reel-peek etc, and the glass art would just stay sharp :)

I know but didn't want to go into the specifics, read a fair bit over at FE and Harvey wasn't happy either but it is what it is.

Done a bit on automating the 3d layout generation, still a bunch more to do, but getting there :)
