Temple Of Treasure (Barcrest) - Any earlier ROMs than 0.5 available?

Hi folks, do we have anything earlier than 0.5 available for this? I was looking at the CMA Archive and it's talking about a rechip on 0.3 that removed the red ToT force and made the streak a lot more random, which says to me we'd need 0.2 (at least) for ROMs that responded to this playstyle.

Tommy's DX is running 0.5K (arcade) ROMs.

Reason I ask is it's one I want to do a video for. I can still do the video with the ROMs we have but it'd be more of a tell don't show :)

Also, were knockbacks a thing on the earlier ROMs for this, or was it just wait until it finally offered a red ToT?

Cheers!

This is a bit complicated because we have lots of different programs.

The DX will be running TOTR 0.5 which is a £5 and £15 program. We do have TOTR 0.4 £5 and £15 which can run with no problem in that DX.

There is also TOT2 0.2 and TOT2 0.3 which are both £5 and £15 program but if you try and run it in the DX then all the lamps are wrong.

Then we have T1TR 0.1 which switches to £25 so this is obviously a later program.

Finally we have T1TR 1.0 and T2TR 1.0 which switch to £25 so these are later programs.

The CHR/PIC is wrong and needs to be amended. Later versions of Barcrest ROMs almost always updated the CHR. I'm not an expert on how that is fixed these days, but one of the layout designers will certainly know how.

And what an amazing machine it was on the early £15 chips. You could easily get £100+ on a streak. I always found it interesting how Follow Me offered a repeat chance after the £25 upgrade, which it never did on £15.

I don't have access to the ROMs from here but shouldn't MFME automatically insert the correct PIC code on booting? If not I'm pretty sure it can be worked out easily enough.

Failing that, if the lamp numbers - while wrong when used in another DX - remain the same between boots and when being played, it wouldn't be too hard to convert the lamp numbers. Just a case of editing the layout, probably about an hour's work.

Yeah I think you're right, the latest MFME does that job for us. I was thinking that if the PIC code is correct, the lamps would be correct across versions, as the CHR is just an intermediate mapping ruleset, but it could be someone will need to just amend the lamp numbers.

@logopolisCan you post those oldest ROM versions please? I'll take a look and see if I can revise the lamping.

Thanks chaps that's all very useful, a screwed up CHR definitely makes sense for why the earlier ROMs have their lamps scrambled in Tommy's DX, I'd really hope that 0.3 (and certainly 0.2) would be workers. TBH I think it's still a decent machine to play even on the 0.5 ROMs (and probably made for a much better game for casuals, of which there were still plenty in the £15 era). but in terms of making a video about the machine and its method - having the earlier ROMs running would be a bonus.

We never had that many over here and they were all chipped by the time they arrived, a couple got upgraded to £25 before they finally disappeared.

Here's what the CMA put on their Golden Pages for it back in the day, for the method to have made it onto this page meant it was dead and well chipped out in the wild :)

I never really worried so much about methoding these in the wild.

I had two - both in very busy wetherspoons  - and they were just great full stop. I would often take 40-50 out of one and find it full again the next day - time after time; so I just took whatever they offered.

I generally liked these, but think the one in a local village pub must have been an early chip, used to go utterly bonkers. The one in the centre of town once gave me an absolute battering. I felt safe on it knowing what the other one played like.

The joys of being an underage addict, not appreciating the difference a shit chip could make 😮

I’ve seen this with a couple of MPU5 roms.  TOT2, sounds like a different version branch from the original, especially as it has different lamps??  Wonder why this was done, just a revamp of the cabinet, looms etc?  Strange one, even though it says 0.2 it might be that it’s an even more updated revision than the 0.5, be interesting to see how it plays.  Of course playing it will require lamps reshuffling :)

Ah... That's got me thinking. Wasn't the original in the short Genesis cab? At the same time I'm sure I played at least one in the 'New' tall Genesis cab. But I could be remembering that completely wrong!!

Wondering if maybe one set for the old cab and one for the new?
