I’ve had a wip in progress for years now but it sufferers from lockups when entering the top board.  Can’t seem to find a cure, plus I can’t find any decent artwork either so unfortunately it’s on the permanent todo list :(

ah man the lo tech king is beaten.. :( let me know if those images surface won't you, then i can tick two off my list of wip's.. thanks for understanding and no impoliteness meant as always

    Hi Everyone

Bit of an update - after avoiding covid for 2 years, both myself and my wife finally got it and haven't been very well. So life in general hasn't been great recently. I'll make some progress on this stuff and share with you when I can.

    Cheers

    Ed

    All the very best wishes

Mini tech update on the work going on wrt layout extraction/MAME stuff... thanks to the talented @SomeRandomGuyIdk, I got to experiment with the decrypted data stream on the new .fml format, as a potential for replacing my 'flakey but working' extractor.

While it's possible to develop, I'm looking at going back to my flakey one... as it could end up being months of work - the benefit would be a standalone program that can open a .fml + .gam, and write out a 'universal' layout format (like my flakey program does now).

The problem is the time to develop - as once it's done, I really don't think it's get much use to justify putting everything on hold - though it would of course be a superior solution.

Here's some example of the output (very basic initial header reading):
    172728166-41dbfde5-a71f-4c76-90b5-135aa6bf166d.png

So it gets that data without having to launch/screenscrape/remote control MFME.  It reads from the .fml (an extra step is involved with a patched MFME though it'd probably be possible to eliminate that step if I had the time to develop the decoder). It's definitely cooler, but reverse engineering the entire loading logic and internal delphi/mfme memory structures - it's just too a high time cost to continue with at this stage, for not enough gain.

So the plan is to go back to the slightly flakey but working technique.  Not the most exciting tech updates at the mo, no eye candy lol!   But work continues... :)

one day you need to write yourself into code and that way you can double your output ;)

The only issue I had and that just may lay with PC monitors is that they looked dreadful in portrait mode partly because they where TN monitors, in other words the viewing angle in portrait mode was crap and you had to move your head as it went darker in certain viewing angles.

I've never tried a modern TV though, so don't know how they'll look. As @woodsy said charity shops, or even fleBay! (you may get a cheap one without a bracket/stand etc.).

saw a 1080p 32" samsung relatively new model for £65 yesterday, an amazon wall bracket that rotates £15 and via hdmi i can tell you it looks good, the wireless connection stutters and as it's a rotating wall mount, you can maybe just upgrade your tv for something special and multi purpose, either way update the thread with your config as it will be good to see

Thanks. Still undecided as another pc would set me back about 300 and a monitor is 100 so if I go with the monitor option then il give it a go 👍

you can get a second hand 32-47inch tv from a charity shop and use a wall bracket to mount it and rotate it to portrait. i can connect by hdmi or wirelessly screen cast to my 42 tv.. the hdmi is better as its not laggy, but the wireless option adds portability.. just adding the option..

I was going to save a few quid and stop paying for the server....

I’m not trying to be condescending but is there any way you can monitor traffic to make a decision? *i know nothing about servers etc so sorry if that was more laughable than logical

Try donating......... the site is not here to make money - but to support a community and that incurs charges,

A small donation will help the site to continue so that you can access the machines in the first place, and will change your maximum downloads significantly.

I donate a little bit each year - and the pleasure i derive from the site - and the hours of enjoyment mean i am basically paying next to nothing for quality entertainment. (I would like to pay more - my finances do not allow that - and yet every donation i do make is met with genuine thanks)

    Thats my take anyway.

Couldn’t put it any better than that!

LOL, very true, even I don't usually bother with most classics. Layouts I create myself, I generally don't ever load them up again.

My mute Epoch classics, get between 20-40 downloads.

I create them, because a lot of people won't and it will make it easier if/when the artwork, sounds turn up.

Sounds have turned up for Holy Smoke, Trailblazer, Pounds Of The Baskervilles and most recently Hog Money.

Also at least the machine is out there for those who download everything.

I’m one of the 40, mute or not, most of them are unheard of games from my era, so I like to try them.. granted not for long but your efforts are not in vain

Maybe you could produce a list of Scorpion 4 machines without sound roms, or incorrect roms.

People can see if the sounds have turned up since the layout has been released.

Anyone thinking of doing a Scorpion 4 layout with incorrect sounds, not all sounds are compatible.

You may also get lock ups where the machine expects sounds.

Is it epoch that really won’t have it without sounds,

Sorry guys, quick update - there is a further layer of side-tracking taking place - as my help is needed for some specific FME work over with the MAME team (related to improvement of MPU4 and probably other techs), which I need to take care of... so the revised plan is now:  do some work for 1-2 weeks to help with MAME FME dev; then back to rewriting the Machine Library system; than after that I can get the current batch of cabs finished, and move onto the JPM Electra.

There's just so much to do, and such limited free time to spend doing it!  That is the updated plan though - we'll get there... :)

for the uneducated does this mean MAME can emulate fruit machines too?

Yeah sorry man I know you've been waiting a while to see yours start coming through!  Whenever I find myself losing time though like I am with this new Machine Library issue... I find it's better to be patient, and put everything on hold to try improve the process - leads to more cabinets overall in the long run over the same time :)

I totally agree, the work you do is far more important than my vanity! If I understood it I would be only too happy to help!! Hope it goes well

Got the metal surrounds away and it's a 4 pin connector. I've ordered a relay, just need to work out how to use it when it arrives! Hopefully you can find me some info on that other hopper (2nd pic) as there is literally no information or manuals for this that i could find. E-service have no U hoppers in stock, Ebay want over £60, so I've contacted Maggi Electronics to see if they think they could  repair my broken ones. At least I can play ones that pay out in £1s but really missing my oldies lol. Thanks to all that have looked and all that have tried to help me out.  This community is truly awesome.

I don't know fella.  I don't have a touchscreen windows machine.  I do have a letterbox type touchscreen that I sometimes use for mfme, just all the button on this 9" wide screen, it's very handy.  Not sure why people don't build cabs with them to be honest.  Though, I do like the tactileness of pressing buttons.

It’s a physical button for me every time, that’s a integral part of the experience, a touchpad just pushes it over the boundaries to being a virtual over a machine in my mind
