Pinball Fantasies - Amiga

One of my favourite Amiga games is Pinball Fantasies. It was so far ahead of the game when it was released in 1992 by Digital Illusions. Even PC Gamer at the time of its first review said it was the greatest game of all time. The ball physics were amazing. This is a real classic. They went on to create versions for other platforms but the Amiga original will always be the best.

My favourite table was Party Land. Very addictive.

There were other follow up releases like Pinball Dreams and Pinball Mania, but Pinball Fantasies will always be the best.

Great game. I spent many an hour on this in my youth. Party Land was also a favourite of mine.

It was actually created by the demo scene group, The Silents.

Originally a Swedish demo scene group. In fact, lots of the demo scene guys, in particular from the Scandinavian countries who learnt their trades on the C64 and Amiga, went on to produce lot's of the games we love today.

The Silents became Digital Illusions, and now EA Digital Illusions CE AB or in short form DICE.

I loved that game, and like you, Party Land was my favourite table... think i first discovered it as a demo on the cover of an amiga mag, but bought the full product, I believe i also have pinball illusions too - still have it all... I will have to go into my dad's loft and retrieve my retro gear sometime!

Cheers,

Gary.

Hello MPU_FIVE,

I think that most retro gear ends up in a loft somewhere, should be got out and dusted down and have a trip down memory lane.

Some of them old mag cover disks were great. I have got loads of them from Amiga Format and other Amiga mags, amazing how many Amiga dedicated magazines there were...

Yes i think it probably was... I believe it had just the 1 table on it (Party Land) and would let you play for either 2 or 3 minutes and then if you wanted another go you'd have to reset the Amiga and load it up again... did that alot before buying the complete game.

At least someone actually paid the devs for games! :)  There was another awful lot of this going on in the late 80s-early 90s ;)

That said you did need to be linked to someone who could source the cracked games, ultimately coming from a BBS (or the snail mail).  I didn't play many games, but I was lucky to be 'connected' to a couple of people who were in the scene :)

Oooooh the old X-copy the most used Amiga App lol

I did a work experience from, school at a place called something like Humberside Computer Services.  He sold Amigas and printers etc, but the real cash cow was we had several amigas along the wall, and people would browse the games, and choose some, and then we'd write them a copy.  I believe it was £3 for a single disc game; multidisc games were £2 per disc.

There became a problem with kids coming in, browsing the master copies (Dave was getting these via post and BBS) and then 'shoplifting' games... so then Dave set up a system, so his masters were all on 5 1/4" floppies instead - in X-Copy, it didn't mind if the source drive was an external 5 1/4" drive (so you'd then copy from DF1 -> DF0).  The shoplifting dropped to zero overnight!  (As no-one could use those massive discs in their Amigas).

He got busted by FAST three times, each time, the fine was far less than the money being made from selling the copies, so he'd just pay the fine and carry on :)

At one time almost every stall at Withernsea Sunday market were all game copies, the feds never seemed to bother them...

Even though I was involved, I have to admit that the Amiga may have faired better had it not been for the ubiquity of software piracy.  All the talented game devs got out of the Amiga ecosystem, and focused on SNES/Megdrive/Saturn/PS1 and the poor old Amiga was bereft of software... amazing computer for its time though :)
