Reg
As I am in a serious retro mood I am also looking at the Commodore 64. If I could find a really cheap one on eBay I would have to go for it. However... ...lots of threads talk about SID tested - I know this is the sound, but is there some kind of major problem with these or high failures ? By the amount of auctions that speak about it being tested - I am putting 2+2 and maybe getting 5, but is there something that buyers should be concerned about ? Gary
the SIDs are the same as any old chip, really need a heat sink putting on them to protect them. The biggest issue with the C64 is the PSU. The 9v ac has been seen as high as 15v volts and the 12v and 5v DC can go to crazy values as well. If you want to risk the original PSU then get a power saver
Gary
just looked into this 9v AC issue and found this bit of info The 9volt is present to get the 60Hz cycle for the 6526 TOD clocks I believe, and for sure I know it is rectified on the board to 9v DC or12 v DC for the SID chip i.e. if your 9v AC goes crazy its bye bye SID chip hence everyone saying SID tested
