They block in the way they can lengthen and shorten the odds at will. I've got a few randoms in my collection (Barcrest, Astra, Bell Fruit and Novomatic) and they exhibit so much repeatable behaviour they are effectively playing like a compensated machine, with a 'random' sticker :)

It could be, but remember that “randomness” and “repeatable behaviour” are 2 different things. The outcome of an individual credit can be completely random, but the actual visible events aren’t. An example is the fuss over Jammin Jars when 2 streamers got identical bonus games. Getting the bonus game was random, as was how much it paid, but the actual events of the bonus game were predetermined and following a script.

It’s in human nature to look for patterns everywhere, which forms the illusion of compensation. The vast majority of these games will be completely random, simply because there is no need to compensate them on the sly.

  2. Great post, and I love the touch of donating to a charity Chris would have cared about. An excellent way to show the community's respects.

I'll pop something extra in the donations pot for this year, knowing that it will be used in this way. Hopefully others will chuck in whatever they can afford, too.

RIP Chris, you genius. Massive respect.

Thanks for that Dougsta, I can totally understand Big Game, it was a similar kind of game.

I'll take a look at Volcano. So that will just suddenly become invincible without some kind of trail / question mark collecting, i.e. no rhyme or reason to it?

Volcano will randomly light up the BWB button during the feature. If you press it, you go invincible. There's nothing you have to collect or do in order for it to happen.

Apart from Ooh Ahh Dracula and Boulderdash, can you think of any others that will turn the Flashing mode OFF when you do something like use the Bonus during the feature?

Barcrest's Big Game does this too.

Apart from Clownin' Around and Ooh Aah Dracula Club, are there any machines that will just randomly turn "invincible" MID-FEATURE?

As you found out with DOND Mega it will start offering £100 (the bells) if you don't collect anything. Also it should just shoot Mega Streak on the shots. This is kind of a separate pot.

Interesting. This is probably an overspill pot, and only gets released once both current and overspill pot are maxed out. Otherwise the overspill money probably just gets transferred elsewhere once current pot is depleted.

I think this is why brute forcing many Bellfruits was a bad idea. A lot of the money just got squirreled away and paid out much, much later.

  6. Knocking back invincible boards has been a common trick down the years. It's something a programmer might not expect, and therefore not adequately protect the machine from.

Lotta Luck and its clones are well known examples. Another one I can remember is Space Invaders by Crystal - flat profile normally, but knock back a few invincible boards and it can go on a 4 jackpot run.

DOND Banker's Bonus for this one.

    Thanks for the video.

I agree with your comments around compensation. Ultimately I think they undid themselves with their various oversights, and casual players were killed off. Let's face it, for how long would anyone keep playing games that have high cost and low entertainment value?

I suspect programmer salaries/benefits in the fruit machine industry weren't great. Talented staff would probably move on to better things pretty quickly, with only inexperience/incompetence left behind to make the next games.

    Emptying Club Psycho Cash Beast.

Great stuff @Chopaholic. You've captured nicely how much of a twat it can be! You might not get a sniff for ages, then 2 or 3 big wins can come in quick succession. You could have done a couple of things differently, but to be honest it didn't matter in the end.

£100 is definitely the rarest of the 4. You had a couple of exchanges where it was the best option, but don't think you actually missed a genuine opportunity to win it.

An interesting emptier, and it's good to see another piece of history preserved. Thanks for the video!

A true JPM classic for this one - Snakes & Ladders.

Thanks for the video, entertaining stuff.

Sonic would be another good one, once Pook releases his updated version. Not as in-depth a game as Snakes & Ladders, but still a classic that deserves a run out.

  10. Yeah nice win. You basically got it up to a 32x multiplier, and I imagine the odds of that are very low indeed.

It can probably be worked out with a bit of effort and if they're transparent with the various probabilities, but it should be far less than 1% of Pachinko games.

  11. The early chips of The Addams Family used a voice sample of Lurch when at a feature exchange. This got removed and replaced with a different sound on later versions.

I always wondered if maybe Ted Cassidy's voice wasn't part of the license Barcrest had and got them into hot water. The rest of the voice samples seemed to stay as they were.

I very much suspect they just nicked it. Back then there were quite a lot of music libraries that were 'pay per use', but essentially relied on whoever was using the music to be honest about it and pay the fee. Where the use case scenario was rather obscure (and a fruit machine's music probably falls into that category), it wasn't unusual for basic thievery to occur.

Could be wrong in this case, but I wouldn't be surprised if no cash changed hands.....

I've still got some of the CDs from the time period upstairs, these date back to the mid-late 90s, so the same sort of era as Big Bucks!

I very much suspect you're a hoarder! No doubt your family despairs of you :)

    Must be just me then!

i was only 2 when this came out, so i could be forgiven for not making the connection sooner, but just realised it was used on BFM's Surprise Surprize for nudges:

No it's not just you :) I'm always curious about the samples as well.

There are so many examples. Maygay did it a lot in the era of Coronation Street and the like. Wild Zone uses an old Top of the Pops tune, EastEnders had The Stranglers, James Bond sampled Duran Duran etc.

The Simpsons and the film Jungle Book have also been plundered for samples down the years. Barcrest's Buccaneer has voice samples from King Size Homer. Maygay's Cash Is King took loads from Jungle Book.

    @Chopaholic

Any chance you can create a video to show how to reverse the third hold on reels please? I've never been able to get it to work.

I've heard pessimist talk about it a few times but never actually seen him show it on a video.

PS - I really love you background stories of "back in the day when I were a lad" :P Definitely adds more flavour to the videos.

I've not watched the video yet, but I assume it's this trick. If you are given a 3rd hold, you can change what you are holding to a different matching pair.

The easiest example works on Spyker the Biker. If you get 3rd hold on the overlaid pig symbols, but there is at the same time 2 matching fruit, you can switch to the 2 matching fruit and it will spin the 3rd fruit in. There are setups for £4 and £6 on Spyker.

With many of the JPMs of the time, this same trick worked. In fact, it worked when you got 3rd hold on 2 non-matching reels! You just switched to the matching pair for the 3rd hold and in it came. It worked on Impulse and Red Alert, until they pretty much removed it in the lackluster V5 chip.

There's a very simple fix for this version.

Simply click on design, then edit mode, then design, then misc tools and click amalgamate lamps. The option was named as consolidate lamps, in v5 and possibly in v6 also, if you are using an older version.

In general, on this layout, there is a bit of spongy effect on the lamps, because of the way they have been cut out.

This above method will work on any other versions of this machine or other machines with 4 lamps, as long as the 4 lamps have been created by the layout designer, in the hope that the emulator, would be updated to allow more than 3 lamps. Which of course in 2016 it was.

Are also fixed with the above method.

Austin Powers by RB, doesn't work

As only 3 lamps were lamped.

Dammit - I thought I'd seen a post some time ago saying there was a quick way to fix this issue, but couldn't track it down. I did it the long way, but in any case we now have a fixed version of Brainwaves, and know the quick way to fix other layouts.

😮 I fixed this problem before, you have to edit the coloured lamps and delete the off image, then send to back and do the same with the image that's now at the front 😁

    Brainwaves fix 😁 - YouTube

Yeah that's the old school workaround. Our friend Wizard did introduce support for 4 lamps so that this wouldn't need to be done, so I've done a fix for Brainwaves the way he would have wanted :)

@jackymiester - I have sent you the layout via PM. If anyone else wants it, just PM either myself or jackymeister.

With the layout, there is an annoying blue part constantly visible at the top of position 10. This is part of the background and, since I'm not a DX designer, I didn't even try to fix it. There are also some obvious missing lamps on the layout too. It's badly in need of an update. For now though, we have a playable Brainwaves at least.
