  1. Ok, this is ridiculously early days. But I figured I'd at least show my intention.

So I've stripped the working parts from the machine (Quixant PC - already sold - NV9+ USB notey, SR5 coin validator and an Azkoyen hopper, albeit too modern I believe for MFME).

What I've also done while at it is broken Go For Gold for parts. As nice as Go For Gold was as a curiosity, it was bought relatively cheaply as faulty, and just happened to have the correct coin validator (126DFX) and hopper (Azkoyen parallel) that others seem to be using in MFME cabs. So in some ways, even though it's died, it's donated some organs... OK that's a bit grim. But at least it served a purpose.

The intention is to run MFME with coins in and out using the existing metalwork, hopefully negating the need for any DIY bodging. In good news the hopper from the Go For Gold is set up in exactly the same way as the one from Vegas Strip - ejects coins in the same position, and even fits onto the existing bracket. So again, no need to 'bodge' the hopper to make it fit!!

In other news, the 126DFX is just a teeny bit tall for the existing metalwork - so I'll either need to make a small alteration to the metalwork, or trim a bit of plastic from the top of the 126.

Existing buttons are all fine. I do have the buttons and decals from Go For Gold if I fancy a more 'Concept specific' decal collection but I'm not too fussed. The original Electrocoin ones look quite nice.

As I said very, very early days. Barely even started actually. But I hope that by putting this thread up I'll give myself a bit of a kick up the arse to actually crack on with it as a New Year's project!

Aim is to run a bunch of Concept ROMs (and possibly other lo-techs), it'll be my dedicated 'simple slots' machine, leaving the cab I got from No1Stoney and the Interplay (which I'll also do some more work on) for pub fruits and the like.

    Hopper looks good matey. 😁

    Brilliant, thanks!

Possible change of plan. Since Vegas Strip is dead, and it's an Electrocoin themed cab with Electrocoin buttons, and already has an Azkoyen hopper (albeit wrong type) I fancy putting the Go For Gold bits in there. Would remove the need to make a lot of physical adjustments to make the hopper fit and pay out :)

That would get a thread of its own :)

Back on the topic of Interplay I'm going to get the metalwork for the hoppers back from Spa (don't need the hoppers but think Spa did), and use one of the old Parallel MK4 Universal hoppers from a skill with prizes cabinet in it. Again, that would save me from needing to 'make' metalwork and whatnot for the coins to pay into the payout tray, as it should all line up correctly as-is. In theory I could also add a 20p hopper down the line in place of the original 10p hopper that would have been fitted adjacent to the Universal hopper. But I'm not planning on double hoppers at the moment.

At this rate I'll end up with a garage of MFME cabinets lol :)

  3. Wow, this thread got old. Unfortunately I started getting a bigger machine collection - but I'm currently in the process of selling most of it so that frees up time and space for me to finally work on the Interplay :)

Now - the Concept Go For Gold - that I was planning on keeping purely as it has bugger all value - I realised I could actually use some bits from it... The coin mech is a 126DFX which looks like the correct type. But I'm wondering if this is a parallel hopper? I hope so. It doesn't look like CCtalk or anything daft like that.

If so it gives me a few options - use it as a donor, or possibly (and this is a bit mental) keep the cabinet intact but add a PC, stick a monitor on the reel shelf and monitor on the shelf and use it for lo-techs, with the 'reels' on the monitor visible through artwork on the front glass 😮

Haven't decided which but the main thing is seeing if it's the right hopper :)

I should imagine playing video games to any reasonable level would be difficult on a hand-held device.  But fruits on the other hand would be a different animal 🙂

Yeah, the Reflex apps, CashmanEQ apps e.t.c. are all playable on phone. Mind you I do go for the bigger handsets (normally 6.5" and upwards) due to my fat fingers lol.

  5. Interesting idea but doesn't really seem worth it. That cabinet is designed for a 9.7" original 2010 iPad from what I can see. So to get a 15" display in would require more than just a bit of cutting. You can get smaller touchscreens obviously.

Don't forget you've got to also get a PC, capable of running MFME inside there, as well as iPac for buttons.

As a novelty project I guess it would be an interesting challenge but if you wanted a compact cabinet you'd be better off building your own, or looking for a portrait mode bar-top.

I'm not sure but there was an issue with the shortcut key for the Mr. Barcrest button on some machines. I think it was something to do with the shortcut B or M. Can't remember exactly.

Interesting! I'll have to look at that.

Either my memory is completely shot, or something weird is happening under emulation (and possibly only to me).

On almost every Barcrest machine, the 'taxi' bonus often (but not always) behaves in an odd way, in that when it stops going in one direction and reverses, it flips off that last square really quickly.

Does anyone else see this?  It didn't used to be like this on the actual machines, did it?

I feel like on some machines it did jump off... I think Big Brother might have done from when I owned the real machine?

If so it's likely similar machines based on the same code (Psycho Cash Beast, Frenzy) might exhibit the same behaviour? Been a while since I played any in the wild.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I'd definitely want a coin mech and hopper as well if I was going to the trouble of building one anyway. So is a PC better because of IO connections?

I think the issue is that the PC power supply is typically used for driving hoppers and the other components, and the PACdrive and hopper it drives needs to share the same power circuitry.

So with a teeny little PC or laptop you'll probably just have a little external PSU providing a fixed voltage. With a desktop PSU you'll typically have a range of cables with different specs you can easily drive other components with.

If you need a cheap PC though, really you want to get an office computer from a couple of years ago or something. You can usually get them really cheap, then add a graphics card. A lot of companies upgrade every few years, if you know someone who works in office type work you could ask them to let you know when upgrade is happening. I had a friend year's ago who would make serious money by literally just buying up all the old stuff from companies in bulk for dirt cheap and selling them on eBay.

My garage PC is a Dell Workstation, had everything I needed including loads of USB3, dedicated GPU, cost me about £100 delivered and was basically mint inside. 480GB SSD and 16GB RAM as well as official Windows 10 Pro.

It's pretty old hardware (Xeon CPU equivalent to a 6th gen i7)... but total overkill for something like MFME.

I can't recommend old office PCs enough.

I'm surprised more people don't use old laptop internals in these cab's, lot less space consumed.🤔

Nice build though. I might try and build one at some point, some inspiring stuff for sure.🙂

I tried using a micro PC (teeny little Lenovo) in one. It's fine for free play e.t.c. but it'll cause issues when it comes to running real coins. So it'll be parted out and swapped with a proper tower at some point.

But if you just want a fun way to play a collection - yes, laptop innards or teeny PC would be perfectly adequate, just make sure it's not totally ancient.

    What size screen is that?

I want to build another lol. But with 2 screens,  one for the reels and one for the top part. It can be done.

Looks good that btw. Send us some pics of the inside.

I'd always been tempted to repurpose one of my digitals in that way when one dies. Something like my Electrocoin Vegas Strip cabinet. Lovely and compact and a pair of 4:3 screens. I mainly play lo-techs anyway these days, so it would be easy to have that type of machine in a dual screen config. Would also work nicely with lo-techs with a set of top reels in the top glass.

Mind you I've still not made any progress on my cabs. I probably ought to sell some of my collection off, might give me a kick up the arse to work on the MFME cabs.

  11. Some music really hits harder when put into context... so a couple of examples really stand out for me.

A recent one, while playing through Zelda Links Awakening (Switch re-release) for about the 50th time, is the Face Shrine theme. It's a lovely version of the original song, which features the original Gameboy music which kicks in just after the 50 second mark.

It comes at a part of the game when you discover a truth that changes the way you feel about the game, and your purpose within the world. It starts to become a bit darker. Again you probably won't feel anything unless it's a game you've played and understand the significance of the Face Shrine.

Another obvious example would be something like the Aeris death theme from FFVII. On it's own it's a beautiful piece of music, but taken in the context of when you first hear it play, it's much more impactful.

(edit - just realised this is the 16 bit forum - sorry! Didn't notice on my phone browser!)

@MikeyMonster AWP or Clubbers! Anything really.

Interesting about DOND, yes trying to force was not brining to much luck!

Will give those bad boys a load up in the coming days, see what happens!

you ever potted a clubber in the real world mate?

    Cheers!

    Stu

While this post wasn't directed at me, I've potted loads of club machines over the years. Issue was finding out that there was so much variety in the way the jackpots were available.

Some were an easy enough force, a bit like a longer winded pub machine session. Some were utterly unforceable, and the jackpot / cashpot just seemed to be unlocked at random (although more likely it was a set amount of credits between them, say 10000 credits or something daft).

Some were (or at least appeared to be!) literally just pub machine code, with an extra prize on top of the ladder. They typically played like a pub machine of the day, with a massive block before the jackpot.

Some of them the feature had bugger all value, and you basically had to wait for the machine to either drop the jackpot / cashpot win 1 symbol away on the winline and give nudges.

    Evening all,

For a bit of fun, can folks please list any machines that are a real stinker to Jackpot. Be good to have a crack at those.

Been playing deal or no deal crazy chair, boy it's tight as! with over 1.4k in 150 out, not paying above 15 at the mo.

    Have a great day all!

    Stu

Lord of the Rings Club. Try and get a jackpot without looking for the method (unless you already know it). Don't think it's even possible to get a jackpot without using it!

  14. Shows just how amazing a gift he gave us, and how talented he was. Despite him not having been here to keep updating MFME for the last 3 years - people are still finding resources, building cabinets and releasing previously un-emulated machines.

Bar the most recent stuff (most of which is utter garbage anyway) I couldn't have imagined quite how many machines would be covered. Obviously we won't know for sure (unless he ever told anyone) but I'd imagine he didn't realise quite how many machines and layouts would have been done when he first put the emulator out there.

I don't think I've ever come across a piece of software with such a long lifespan.

    Thanks again Chris.

  15. It used to be frowned upon 'back in the day' when people just joined sites to ask for ways to make money on machines without contributing.

But these days there's bugger all advantage to be gained from old methods and it's good fun to play about in the emulator and see how others were taking all my money out of the machines :D

Worth doing again my friend !

Loved finding this on the PC and amazed I got so far !

These older PopCap games were bloody addictive. Peggle (the original, also Peggle Nights) might be worth a shot? Not sure you'd enjoy it but it's a simple, relaxing game that will leave you wanting to punch the screen at times. Unfortunately then EA bought PopCap and totally ruined them as is often the case :(

Totally ingenious, I agree you should of hung fire.  £350 for a whole arcade in one cabinet is way too cheap, perhaps, maybe you are sad now when you got rid, as am I right? you sold it to Slotsmagic?.  Clever stuff, guess this kept your mind occupied and stimulated for some time :)  What would be cool, would be to see a 30" screen in a cabinet that just runs multiplayer games like party time, The streak, golden game etc... that would be well impressive with the same coins in and out mechanics. Just shows by what you have achieved by doing this, actually what is possible and can be done.  Pat on the back mate, fair play to you :)

Yeah, it's currently at my house, it's in the dining room (I've been allowed a total of 2 machines in there), so have gone with my Interplay MFME cab which is still nowhere near complete, and obviously the one I bought from No1Stoney. Doesn't seem fair to keep them in the machine graveyard. Sorry I mean mancave :)

I'm debating a couple of tiny technical tweaks to it, but only things that I feel might enhance it. One is that the top of the hopper is totally obscured. I think it would be nice if you could access the hopper from the top, even if it's just a holesaw job. A tidy holesaw job mind. I like to be able to see how full a hopper is :)

Hmm.  This is sad to see.

I know I spend my spare time working on the YT channel, but I was always in awe at what you had built here.

As @Road Hog Mad has said, you may regret this.

I'd pause for a couple of months and if you still feel the same way then obviously go for it.

Your cab ( like everyone else's ) is one of a kind and yours is pretty damn unique in a very good way.

It's a great cabinet, and he's only up the road (25 miles or so). If he changed his mind down the road I'd be absolutely willing to let him have it back.

For all I know he could already be planning a more extreme build with what he learned on this one?

It's gone to a good home (mine, obviously. Can't be that bad as Slotscat quite enjoys it here!).

  19. Sold to me, currently keeping my half-converted Interplay happy ;)

Amazing how much of an extra dimension having coins in/out makes, and the front-end that's on it is bonkers. It's quite scary seeing your profit/loss on a decent large display at the bottom 😮

As an example of what can be done it's brilliant. Top man too, very helpful.

Back to losing my shirt in Monopoly Wheel of Wealth now :D

  20. Surprised I hasn't seen this post before. Very fair price for a fully working MFME cabinet. I'm tempted myself as I'm too lazy to finish building my Interplay.

Hopefully someone beats me to it!

(edit) Where you have put it requires two people - is that due to it needing to be moved downstairs for example? If not I'm sure I could move it by myself with a sack truck :)
