Well buggar me, I've just switched the GPU to native 4050 and everything runs perfectly. Why the bloody hell didn't I think of that?
Huge thanks to @Graham the goldfish and @thealteredemu for the invaluable assistance, this was really doing my head in.
HAPPY DAYS!!

Is there any unused lamps that are left hidden on the layout. I think there a few clean up tools in mfme to clean any debris. Very strange though. You got issues, I want them so I can have a delve into it!! Lol
J
No, no unused lamps or anything else cluttering up the layouts.
I'm resigned to the fact that it's my rig and that there's some conflict somewhere. It's odd that I can play the most CPU/Graphics/Memory hungry games without a hitch but when it comes to MFME (for me) it sometimes struggles. I can cope with it though

Is there any kind of crash report or does it not actually crash just hangs?
J
Just hangs mate. Task manager reports memory usage of about 3.5GB whereas normal load is roughly 400mb. What puzzles me, like I said before is I can enter EDIT mode and let the machine initialise then exit EDIT mode and it runs fine.
Plus, this only happens on certain layouts and so far I've not found out a connection. At first I thought it was the size of the layout such as my Poolplay which is quite large but that's not the case. Even at 3.5GB memory usage it shouldn't lock up as I have loads of memory spare. I've tried disabling AV/Malware programs, background apps, turning off non essential windows processes but nothing seem to work.
All the latest windows updates are done, all graphics drivers updated in fact EVERYTHING is bang up to date and it's still playing up.
Bring back XP, that's what I say

Has to be something to do with how the layout is built. So annoying for you!
I did remake a smaller version of Poolplay just for myself and that works perfectly but doesn't explain why other layouts still have issues. Vectra's 'Son of Dracula' isn't a big layout yet it still locks up. I have many far bigger layouts which run fine. It's a puzzle to be sure!

@dad I wonder if it’s a blended lamp issue, that’s pretty heavy on resources. Do you have unpack blended lamps set to on in prefs. If it is on maybe try It off to see if that works.
J
Yes I have that option ticked in preferences. I first noticed it on my version of Poolplay and that doesn't have any blended lamps.
Believe me I've tried everything and I just can't work out what's going on.

OK so I'm still having issues with certain layouts which cause MFME to lock up.
I mean it's not as if my laptop is crap seeing as it's an Intel I7, RTX 4050 graphics with 32GB ram running Windows 11 (home). I'm convinced it's a memory issue (which it shouldn't be) but all is not lost as I think I've found a way round it - even though I can't really explain it properly.
Let's take two recent layouts for example, Vectra's Son of Dracula and Damici's Crazy Fruits...
Loading both as I would normally do they both lock up during initialisation and I have to load up task manager, find MFME and 'end task'. Looking at memory usage in task manager it's reporting about 10+ times the memory it really should be using for a normal MFME layout, even considering the size of Damici's layout it shouldn't be using anywhere near that much memory. WTF???!!!
Now the really WEIRD thing.....
If I load either layout and immediately enter EDIT mode and let the machine initialise as far as the attract mode sequence, then switch edit mode off the layout runs normally with no massive memory issues whatsoever and I can play the layout as normal.
I have no explanation why this works but it does. Anyone else having a similar issues then give this a try.
Cheers

Try changing 'DataPak' from 'no' to 'yes' in configuration, then reset using Ctrl+R.

Did you get this sorted?
Not really. Sometimes MFME works perfectly, sometimes it crashes, especially with Poolplay. I even redid a smaller res version yesterday which ran perfectly then went back to the original and that ran fine too. I’m stumped!!

Mine’s an I7 32Gb Ram & RTX 4050
I’ve been trying to get my Poolplay DX working more than anything. For some reason the reels pop out of sync. Strangely enough last thing last night I tried the Classic which seemed to run ok.
i can post my windows updates later if you like.

it needs to be the redistributable off that link Wizard posted the link on there if that doesn't sort it then you have a unique problem
Yeah I grabbed it from that link.
Baffles me how say SC5 MPU5, even Astra A1 work like a charm, but others don't. I'm still working my way through each tech.
Can't be graphic related surely, its got to be sound. There are no Firewall, Malware, Windows Defender, DirectX issues either as like I say newer techs run fine.

@dad Do you get a crash screen or does it just hang?
I know there are some strange situations whereby mfme requires an internet connection.
J
Just hangs mate. Normally after the reels initialise, might get one spin if I'm lucky.
I even tried switching to onboard graphics and disabling the main RTX GPU. That didn't work either.

Nope, not DirectX. I tried DX9 & DX10.

I’ve been using Win11 since I got my new laptop. I’ve not had any issues with mfme at all. My win11 is fully update.
Whwt old techs are crashing. I’ve been playing some MPU3 machines and some other older techs recently.

Electro
Epoch

Don't know if Windows still has it but there used to be a startup mode (in addition to normal and safe) where you picked whether each driver/service started up - maybe use this to determine if something specific is bothering MFME.
Hmm, its a thought but EVERYTHING else is running fine. In fact MFME is running fine but only on certain newer techs. It's the old stuff that's locking up such as my beloved JPM Poolplay.

Just trying to eliminate possibilities, have you tried, to attach the laptop up to a monitor or TV and select the TV/Monitor in the audio option and have it play through HDMI.
I have an MSI laptop on Windows 10 and my previous one, was on Windows 8 and neither had an such issues. My Windows 10 laptop, isn't with me at the moment, so can't see what my audio is set to. Will have it available tomorrow.
No I've not tried that but might do if all other possibilities fail.
I'll keep plugging away though, maybe it'll sort itself through future updates. It's really annoying but at least I still have my old laptop for MFME is necessary.

If it is possibly a sound driver/device issue, have you looked under file/preferences (without a layout loaded) and had a change about with the audio device, in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Yep, no other option apart from Realtek which uses default settings same as my other laptop.

That affected mfme 2.0 if I recall correctly when Wizard rewrote mfme that bug went away Dells are usually pretty bulletproof have you run dell update?
It’s not a Dell, I’ve gone for a MSI now and all updates are done as far as I can see.

thank you ill try that updates are all up to date the newer games works fine i just tired king kerberb and austin powers and it loads up and just sits on the £25 display then crashes ill try and download mfme again otherwise ill just have to find a old windows 10 machine
I'm having similar issues now with my new laptop.
I 'was' using a Dell Inspiron gaming laptop running Win11 with no problems at all, but now I've upgraded to a lot more powerful RTX Gaming lappy. The issues I'm having are also with the 'older' techs, basically anything from M1a backwards. The game initialises then locks up when the reels spin. Occasionally it gets past that but I might only get a couple of spins before it locks up and I have to close MFME via task manager. I never had this problem before.
Everything is up to date with drivers etc.. so I'm a bit stumped to be honest and usually I'm quite tech savvy when it comes to stuff like this.
As @Altharicwill remember it used to be the Realtek sound drivers that used to cause problems with older versions of MFME. I might investigate that option unless anyone has any other ideas.
Thanks

Not seen that one before, sorry.

Looking forward to this. I’m overdue a laptop update anyway. Currently on a GTX 1050 but will be getting a decent spec RTX at some point.

It sounds like you're planning to make what we would call a Pseudo DX or PDX which is kind of cross between a 'classic' and a 'DX'.
There's nothing wrong in doing that but if you're a graphic designer I'd recommend you try and get your artwork to look as close as possible to the 'REAL' machine. DX's are far more enjoyable and more popular, especially if its a complete crystal clear re-draw like we've had a few of recently.
Additionally if you're going to take someone's classic (or DX) and alter it in any way it's always best to obtain permission 'whenever possible' from the original creator, especially if you plan to release/upload it.
