So finally finished my small bartop icade conversion. The cabinet lent itself perfectly for the job although was certainly tough trying to squeeze everything in!

So I bought off Ebay an ION Icade off eBay for £18, a HP 15" 4:3 touchscreen monitor for £12 and a Dell micro PC for £40. I ordered an Ipac, Pac drive and a load of buttons from Arcade World along with a Barcrest button and 5v leds off eBay.

I had to cut the top pieces of the side panels off the icade to accommodate the monitor which I stripped out of it's casing.

I wanted the sound to be pretty good as that's the best part for me, the nostalgic machine sounds and music so I fixed a 2.1 edifier PC speaker system to it. The sub on the top and the satellite speakers in the back as didn't want them sticking out.

I simply used sticky back metal effect plastic on the sides. I replaced the control panel for a nice bit of wood.

I used 10 main buttons, an exit button on the left side and a coin one on the right as well as 2 small buttons I use for volume under the fake coin slot which I wired to a USB on the PC.

I am very pleased with the way it turned out 😀

What a brilliant job !!! Definitely looks tight in that control panel so I bet that was fun squeezing everything in!! You've made a cracking job of it all though and I completely agree with you about the sound being really important (second only to the smell of an old arcade). Great work :)

  2. Only had a really quick look at it. Couldn't find the DX editor that you mentioned but found another option in the Design menu 2nd from bottom that gave me 4 screens including a mono screen on the right. Looked like I could play around with those.

But I had to leave it as were on our way to the airport to go on my holiday. Just sat waiting for the wife at the moment so posting back.

Will try again when I'm back on the 24th.

Thanks for all yours and Tommy's help so far.

Does the  dx editor brighten the various arts up it darkens em down with more contrast etc

goto edit mode (red bar up top)

dx editor then add brightness to each art off/on1/on2 make each one the same brightness ie +50 on all three

click apply to each then remask

That's great Vectra. Thanks for your help with that. I can see how a bit of tweaking can get that sorted.

Really appreciate you passing that on (also really appreciate all your hard work on here - most of my fave machines are your hard work so a big Thank You from me!)

    Cheers :)

  4. I'm currently refreshing some of the machines on my cabinet and doing some general jiggery-pokery with a frontend etc.

I've noticed a few machines are darker than I would like. However, if I go into Design mode and just raise the brightness of the background then I noticed that a lot of the other assets aren't transparent - they are just set into a background that matches the dark background I'm trying to fix.

Is there a quicker way to raise the brightness of the background? Or is the only way to download all the bmps of all the assets and then change their background colour to the new shade in photoshop and then reload back to the machine? Would love some expert advice on the best way to proceed here?

These screenshots illustrate what I'm talking about....

    eastenders-dark.thumb.png.77ec3e4698b3fc37df72dc90dac9a26f.pngeastenders-light.thumb.png.3247b2283798ac82f7e65293b68918e1.png

Note: I've increased the brightness more than I would actually like to exaggerate the transparency problem to make it easier to see the issue.

Can't wait to see your new cab 😉😉

I wouldn't hold your breath mate :) I'm just coming to the end of building an extension on the house and we're skint. Plus I'm not sure that the wife would go for another cab build. I've done 3 now and she hates the mess that it causes. I've threatened to build a VPX pinball table next but I'll probably end up with a small wall-mounted jukebox as the next project. Will be next year now though as she wants a partition wall building in the living room to keep the heat in for when our 'fixed deal' runs out for energy in October. Trying to tighten our belts. :)

  6. Thought it would be worth re-posting the videos I made many moons ago on my own cabinet build. It just means we keep everything together and hopefully it will help someone take the leap to making their own cabinet.

Here's one I made showing the build with some explanations on what the components are...

And here's one talking about the software and demo-ing the machine....

Apologies for the quality of these efforts... I'm not in any danger of winning an Oscar... you have been warned :)

If I had the room I would make one like that @No1Stoney, it really does look brill!!

The hopper I use for 10p's still keeps paying out too much, I asked the seller (e-service) to send me a new sensor as a bit of investigation turned out it was faulty, they did, it improved it but it's not perfect (It was one they had lying around apparently). Anyway bit the bullet and ordered a new one off eBay for a couple of quid but will have to heat shrink it to the existing wires/terminals.

Anyone else had problems with 10p payouts?

I've got a 10p hopper but (so far) not had any issues (fingers crossed / touch wood etc) :)

As for the focus issue I'm hoping I code a quick app that will return focus to the main front end or mfme after say 500ms of no touch on that screen.

I wonder if AutoHotKey could do something like that???

Enjoy your holiday and look forward to further progress when you get back to it.

    Cheers 🙂

  9. Your cab looks amazing No1 !! Really impressed with it! Plus, I love the idea of sharing RAM files with your mate for that real-life experience 🙂

On the subject of your 'smaller' screen - have you considered running it on a Raspberry Pi or something along those lines to keep it separate from the main PC if all it's doing is a music controller? Or a cheap small form factor PC?

Alternatively (and I've no idea if this would work) I know there are programs that let you have more control over multiple monitors - if memory serves there was one called multimon? I'm not sure if this would help with the 'losing focus' issue or not - I've never gone that in-depth with them but just ideas I had as I read your thread.

Keep up the brilliant build mate 🙂

This is a show us yours thread - of items that you have built - even if you don't have them anymore - please only post completed items to inspire others, not WIP.

But first we must do some thanks to...

    ... @uptown47 and @No1Stoney...

...I am not sure if this tale has ever been shared by me - but if not does not matter - let's do this.

Chris was never EVER going to add support to MFME for external connectivity to hoppers, leds etc.

This was something that long before we ever saw a cabinet I was asking for - but nope - will not happen.  He didn't want MFME moved into a pub enviorment.  I told him that I considered that very unlikely but he could be stubbon and it simply was not going to happen.

Sometime later - very clever work started to happen by 3rd parties that then caused Chris to quietly reconsider.  I don't think he liked MFME being "hacked" to look at the meters and about the time if I recall that @uptown47 and @No1Stoney started to show off cabinet work - things very quickly changed behind the scenes.

No longer was it a voice from myself about features to add - the fact that others had created working machines with MFME as the engine really tipped the balance.

He never gave credit that I heard of for what swung him - but I really do believe that due to the two gentlemen that I mention here - this is why it can do what it does.

You both were the reason that I ( and I really believe Chris ) went off to build our own cabs.

I just wanted to call this out as I look at this area of our community that is just blossoming with cabient builds and people doing work on their personal machines

Apologies Reg... for some reason the emails from the site don't come through anymore... I've checked my Spam folder and nada... not sure what the problem is but, anyhoo, I was on DIF just having a look around and noticed a few mentions.

You're right about Chris not being too happy with bringing MFME into the "physical" realm. I was just standing on the massive shoulders of @No1Stoney and between us we muddled a system of making the machine pay out correctly. It wasn't perfect but it worked!!

He did come round to the idea. I exchanged several PMs with him at the time asking his permission to "go public" with how to read the hopper values etc as I didn't want to do anything to rock the boat and if he had said "No" then I would have kept schtum... however, he was happy to let the community know about it and, the rest, is history.

Always love seeing people making cabinets or working versions of the fruities.

And, it's lovely that you mention me in the same sentence as @No1Stoney as he was the brains that started it all.

This whole site is a remarkable mix of very talented, dedicated people and, at the core of that was Wizard's software. The whole scene is bigger than the sum of it's parts.

    Truly superb!

Cool I will have a look at that and let you know...

No worries. If you do go down the AutoHotKey route just let me know and I'll post my remap script to give you a start on tweaking it to your own liking. :)

Is there a way to change the keybord mappings globaly so for example change start to S rather than spc? I ask because I have a X-Arcade tankstick and wanted to use the buttons on that. There is a tool to remap them in the stick but then I would need two layouts for MAME and MFME.

You could always use a frontend like Launchbox and then use AutoHotKey to remap those keys when you launch MFME?

I do a similar thing when I launch my Hidden Object game. That uses left mouse click and I wanted that mapped to my Ctrl key (Player 1 Button 1 in MAME).

PS... if you didn't want a front end you could just run AutoHotKey manually before you start MFME and then turn the AHK script off when you come out of it?

PPS.... There is probably a way to make AHK auto exit when the MFME process is closed but I don't know how to do it off the top of my head.

is there a limit to how many buttons to have on the board? i might plan to make one myself

The limit is on how many inputs you have on your IPac board. If you were to get the Ultimate I/O board I think there's 64!! So plenty!! 🙂 (there's cheaper ones with less inputs too).

  14. It's been a great event this Reg. You've done brilliantly in organising it. Can't wait to find out what the final total is.... it's like watching Red Nose Night!!! Are we getting Lenny Henry on to announce it??

Pat yourself on the back Reg for a job well done and, I'm sure that Chris will be very touched with your hard work. At the end of the day, the cash is a lovely surprise but I think it's the thought and sentiment that's come out of this that really counts. Hopefully Chris will see all these messages and realise that between his software and the rest of the hard working members of the scene who convert the machines and flyers etc, what a massive difference they have made to so many peoples lives.

I think that this software is unique in that, for some, it has been a lifeline out of addiction and so it has literally saved peoples lives!

    Quite something.... 😃

Agreed these are so good when you see people make things like this.

Again thank you @uptown47 as you set me on the path to the cabinet once as well. :)

It was a joint effort Reg. I think we've all learned from each other along this journey. Great that others are making cabinets and buttons modules though. 🙂
