The getting started guide is excellent and I've had no technical issues getting started , so thank everyone for this it's awesome. My only question is there an FAQ or newbie guide for the definitions. I'm very new to this and a few times I've seen things referenced like "DX release coming soon" or JPM. I'm somewhat confused as to which of these are a type of layout, release, or manufacturer. If I'm over looking a post that highlights these a nudge in the correct direction would be appreciated.

Thanks! :)

Would be a nice idea for something like this to be created, but in answer to your question listed...

Classic - a layout that is basically boxes and drawn out but still plays exactly as the real machine would, just looks different. These are usually the under workings of a DX, which brings us to;

DX - a layout based on the flyer or photos of the real machine.

PDX - a self-drawn DX, so a graphical representation of the machine, but not done using official stuff, this could be because they haven't been able to be sourced, or because the quality of resources is too low.

...and you are the first answer.

I've pinned this post in this area - everybody - stay on-topic here, this is not a debate, memory or whatever thread.

Please just post acronyms and meanings such as @slasher and his post or below that maybe useful to new members.

  • JPM - Fruit Machine manufacturer.
  • BFM - Fruit machine manufacturer, also know as Bellfruit.
  • Barcrest / IGT / SGC ( Scientific Games Corporation ) - Fruit machine manufacturers ( basically the same company across various owners ).
  • RED - Red Gaming, was another brand for Barcrest back in the day.  When downloading roms, these would be the same BBS as Barcrest years ago.
  • Vivid - Again was another brand from Barcrest back in the day.  When downloading roms, these would be the same BBS as Barcrest years ago.
  • BWB - Another brand from Barcrest back in the day.  When downloading roms, these would be the same BBS as Barcrest years ago.
  • QPS - Once an indpendant manufacturer before owned by BFM.
  • Mazooma - Again once an indpendant manufacturer before owned by BFM.
  • Empire - Great fruit machine manufacturer that was very friendly to the scene many years ago.

BBS - Bulletin Board Service.  A secure website operated by larger manufacturers to provide rom files and other technical documentation to subscribers.

HDX hybrid dx uses sounds or roms from another machine similar to it to make em run

This is not correct mate.

G2 have a lot of people from Global, and the name was supposed to be a play on Global2, hence G-Squared. Their first machine was Kung Fu Pounda which was done by guys at a company called TopDog. They then did High Voltage which was a KFP re-glass but with some bits added/taken away.

After this, they entered into a partnership with Betcom (who also did games for Blueprint). Basically G2 would design a game and graphics then send it to Betcom to program. They then dived into the digital machine market with a very nice looking digital cabinet called Casino King.

They later fell out (after Gauselmann/Blueprint owners bought Betcom) with Betcom, not sure on the specifics, but they tried to get going with some TopDog code again with a game called Plumber's Payday, which was originally "The Good, The Bad and The Pugly" - it seemed to have moderate success, but haven't really seen much from them since. They did one called Mummy's Money which was a KFP and then a trump themed one called "Make Jackpots Great Again" or something like that. Pretty sure they did one called "A Fairytale of Moo York" too which had a quirk of the DOND game being properly random, but unfortunately it never took off. A shame really as they're great people and I'd have liked to see them do well vs what we have from the bigger manufacturers left.

Anyway, this isn't the purpose of this topic so will leave it there, but hopefully that's covered a bit.

You'll also hear techs mentioned

ie

MPU - mainly Barcrest but used by others

Pluto - I think JPM were responsible for this.

There are others

Hmm...

There are loads of machine techs, which basically followed the electro-mechanical age. I'll add a couple of basic ones but the list is massive. Would be nice to have a definitive list though. I'll have to research but for now the main ones :

Barcrest :

MPU3, MPU4, MPU5, MPU6

MPU4 Video

(Their own technology)

JPM

MPS1, MPS2, System 5, IMPACT

(Their own technology)

also Heber Pluto 6

Bell Fruit :

Scorpion 1, Scorpion 2, Scorpion 4, Scorpion 5, Scorpion 6

Cobra (Video), Adder 5 (Video)

(Their own technology)

Maygay :

MMM, M1, M1a, M1b, EPOCH

(Their own technology)

That will do for a start, there's honestly loads more, and it gets pretty messy when other manufacturers use different hardware - for example QPS used Barcrest MPU4, Bell Fruit Scorpion 4/5 and possibly 6, and I think they might also have used JPM IMPACT?

I'll do a proper list tomorrow, might take me a while to compile it due to the crossovers involved, and some of the early hardware I've no experience of!!
