Weekend Off-Topic

The weekend might be over but that won't stop me posting a picture of the button panel I'm currently respraying! I've got a thing about button panels. Since it's the bit you interface with, it really ought to be as correct as possible. It's a bit like how you can keep the same computer, but change keyboard, mouse or monitor and it feels like a new experience, even though it's the same machine. Speaking of which I had my knackered mechanical keyboard collected earlier. Actually hoping for a refund or store credit because despite being one of the more premium ones I've bought, I didn't like the switches.

Anyway, probably one more coat after this one, then I'll see how it looks in the morning. IShould be OK, I've used the same method on another pink Genesis cabinet. Admittedly not a perfect colour match (it's not as garish as in this photo, that's the camera in my phone doing that) but a lot better than rusty, bubbly navy blue / black that it had before :)

All buttons cleaned. One stupid amateur mistake - can't find my 5mm bulbs and there's a few out. Then remembered I left them in the bottom of the machine I traded for safe-keeping :D

Oh well, another set of lamps ordered, still waiting on replacement coin validator and other bits so doesn't hold me up at all :)

As you mention Buttons and 5mm bulbs...... I think the bulbs will be 10mm in the button lamps.

Sorry, yes, I have plenty of 10mm bulbs as I used them in my pusher as well, but it's the 5mm ones I need as all the buttons currently lamp, it's a few random lamps on the glasses I need to change :)

Cheers for the heads-up though :)

I re-read my post and I can see why you thought I wanted button lamps. I ramble a bit and lose my train of thought quite a lot :D

Well that's the button panel back in, not a hard job at all to do, just a bit messy what with sanding and painting. If I had a choice I'd go for a slightly darker pink but this will do for the moment :)

Getting rarer, which I guess you can say about most machines of this era, but still the odd one kicking around. This one is still on old coins (updated mech ordered) so presumably it's been home use for a few years now.

Was planning on scanning the reels in for a layout but they are quite badly cracked so I'll have to photo them instead. Fingers crossed I can get replacement bands in good condition but not holding out a great deal of hope. If not I'll see if I can get bands remade as done by @andrew96for his Red Dwarf machine.

Thankfully general MPU5 spares (boards, PSUs e.t.c.) are still in good supply :)

Got rid of my T7, even though I still played it a lot. Can see a lot more of them coming to the market and prices dropping as they get replaced by arcades. Will stick to classic / nostalgic machines now, don't have space issues so storage is no issue.

yes bands can be done and they have let me know they are ready for pickup, but for them to do them you have to do all the artwork yourself, they are not a 'one stop shop' where they do everything, if they did that it would far far outweigh the cost anyone would want to pay! recently over on the mecca some have got decals done and they were disappointed with them as the printing is already coming off and they have only just been done! The place I have them done are happy to do them for me as I do whatever is needed, I have spoken to them and they do now get calls from people off the forums wanting there bands etc done and they have had to say no to everyone as people don't have the right artwork format files for them to print! I did the reelband artwork in photoshop so consisted of the top artwork layer, bottom white layer and cut-out layer in vector form at the right dimensions all in a photoshop .PSD file (or .AL adobe illustrator format they use). also the plastic!! they cannot get the right stuff due to it all being used for covid screens! so you have to supply that too!! basically they just do the printing side! hope that explains it a bit more thoroughly..

that's nice! you can do my red dwarf one!!!

If you wanted I'd be more than happy to, would need to find a reasonable match though. I got my pink from Halfords (Candy Pink), so if you spot any red cars that look the right colour let me know :D

I didn't have a clue but can be a bit of a perfectionist at doing things for other people. Main thing is sanding the old paints off to get back to bare metal, and then priming it properly :)

If it's a Genesis cab the button panels are easy to remove, if you did want me to do it just chuck me the metal over (once all the buttons are removed, the button panel just lifts out). I've got enough primer left so it's just paint I'd need, you could provide your own or I could grab some from Halfords. There's a lot of choices of Red so I'd hope I'd pick a decent match if I had an example to work from :)

Just bear I'm a bit fussy so leave the primer 16>24 hours, then the same again for the paint, so you'd be looking at a few days to turn it around (if I received on a Monday I would post back Thursday at a guess).

cheers thanks! I would not be in any rush so that's not a problem, everything is on hold for now, but at somepoint the glass will need to come out to be reprinted and the reprinting will take some time so most likely around that time, It should have read above that I need to cut out more metal where the disco button is going to go as well, nothing is easy or quick lol

Looks great, loving the trackball! What kind of games use a trackball? I was thinking of one when I finally do my MFME cab for the MPU4 video SWP machines but don't recall many arcade games using them :)

Centipede, Crystal Castles, Marble Madness, Missile Command.

I enjoy all these games.  Crystal Castles is a personal fave.   I’m sure there are lots more trackball games that I haven’t discovered.

I went for the amazing Suzo Happ trackball.  It is the 2 1/4 inch rather than the 3” one as my control panel size is fairly small.  But the action on the trackball is amazing, I love it. ;)
