Fruit-emu is full of the older format layouts any chance you could release the tool so we could have a play?

I'm going through older files for the MAME work, I'll see if I can find all the stuff it needs/get it working again next week - if I can I'll send you a copy, please don't 'spread' it though, as it's not a finished tool!  We don't want loads of glitchy layout conversions popping up :) MAME still has a lot of work to do on the emulation side also, so this is more for internal use to assist with testing MAME layouts when working on the drivers really.

The tool was pretty impressive I remember playing about when I created the DOND DX.

I’m sure I remember the weekend you started working on it ;)   I think I mentioned that you couldn’t make layouts easy in mame and you literally knocked something up in a very short space of time!!!

I seem to remember this did DMD displays and mirrored reels, so in some ways more advanced than the Arcade Sim rebuilds at present! :)

I'm away this weekend, but had chance to have a quick manual test, as can't remember how I had it scripted - it seems to still have various bugs, so I'll not be releasing it until I can allocate time to fix those - priority is the MAME work.  But it is possible for it to be run portably I think... will probably not be for 2-3 weeks at the very earliest.

But it does just about work, I converted this DX tonight, with some minor issues :)

Looks good to me how will you decide which DX to use for the basis for each machine I know Mame can be finicky about what's used Fruitworx were great at the time however a better example for this machine IMO would be ploggys linked below.

Smash Grab

Edit to show screenshot of what the driver looks like in mame without Johns work.

@Altharic I'm not making a big set of DX's for MAME :) - that video was a tech demo of an old project just to see if one could be made...If I can get the  DX tool to some level of portability, I will try package up a copy for your personal use only... But can't say when this would be, as a lot of other demands on time.

I built that Smash n Grab last night, but it's just a tech demo, not the start of a big side project - it doesn't do FMLs ... It's not a good tool for this any more :)

So I was looking through the google sheet WIP and saw this mentioned a few times.

Can I clarify that 100% @razors_back is not me and has never been me, I heard this before over a decade ago and have no idea where it came from. 😆

Ah brill, thanks for the info man :)  I did have a note on my layout artists permissions doc (I have to keep that one non-public as it contains peoples personal stuff like usernames/aliases, email addresses etc), that I realised later on that it was just a coincidence - from my notes:

"NOT RB - that was a mistake I think - RB is a seperate user on fruit emu, posting in same threads as Pook"

So sorry about that, I wasn't around in these earlier years, so I try to piece things together from posts I find, and made a mistake here :)  I'll message @razors_back now and ask, thanks for hooking me up with the user account!

I think this stemmed from my first layout ever released on Fruit Emu, when Duplo commented that he was surprised by the quality of my layout and pondered on similarity in Blade runner based Persona's....

I worked on this stuff years back, and kept a dev log over at @dad's website :) ...a bunch of files from around then got lost to the failed hard drive void lol - had a quick root around though since people are asking, to see if any old vids - did manage to find some early screengrabs of some mfme2mame 'dx' output, though they're quite crude (various minor gfx issues) as these were from early in the project:

I think at the end me and @serene02 had a ccTalk DOND machine working in Door Closed mode (this had not been done yet at that time, they only ran in Door Open, but we got a basic implementation of the ccTalk comms hopper working)... so yeah, MAME can actually run DXs :)

@Spidy21982 This old version of mfme2mame only converts old format layouts from 9.4 though, can't do the new .fml format... so it wouldn't be useful right now, for converting your .fml layouts...

It was an interesting project! :)

Edit: done some googling, someone posted a tutorial video at the time, this is @serene02's DOND layout running (created in MFME 9,4, running in MAME), however this is an earlier video.  Later on we had new hopper code in a test build of MAME that allowed for Door Closed play... ages all that now! :)

Edit 2 :)  Just found a few more screengrabs I took, again from quite early so visual bugs like no reel window overlays etc - these are sc1:

@johnparker007 nice work. is your converter the same as the agemame layout tool ? i thought the agemame layout tool is an editor for mame like mfme where you can build from ground up that i could try.

greetings spidy
