In this topic post anything to do with remembering the good old days with lifestyle in the 70's & 80's that you remember.

The Pay On Answer Phones.

Often housed in these dirty, urine smelling boxes although some still do remain in operation theres very few left.

And the phones that was in them. You could spin a 2p coin in the 10p slot but be quick before them pips run out (for those that remember what pips was) and not Gladys Knight and the pips.

Replaced by these on the early 80's

Coal bunkers & Coal

Came in one of these.

21289566_CoalBaggerlorrys.jpg.e8fca5de14f9e6d26ea4aed8dfbba52e.jpg

Carried by one of these men

954476707_CoalMan.jpg.80b87bdfb1709471d66972be9d5797ba.jpg

And into one of these in the back garden.

457337726_Coalbunker.jpg.273d4f9349fe885114f8aaff9ab4aaaa.jpg538847641_Coalbunker2.jpg.69970a25c4fc42682b015d1ec314e0e9.jpg762492474_Coalbunker3.jpg.069249c15e08f44dc7917ff9a0d7adcd.jpg

Lets get the house nice and warm and then someone forgot to full the coal bucket up, so someone goes outside letting all the heat out of the house to refill it. Classic.

Toilet Paper.

Anyone else remember using newspaper when you was a kid because your parents couldn't afford toilet paper.

we had an outside toilet when i was a kid and you rolled the paper up first to kill the spider before taking a s##t...lol..

also it was far better than the grease proof paper toilet paper the school toilets had...

Telephone Lock 80's answer to locking a phone.

Well with Reg getting a new toy,  and how the telephone lock has been discussed it leads me to place the telephone lock in this topic.

The days when your parents would go down the club and leave you with an underage babysitter only to find that when the bill come in the babysitter had been on the phone all night.  So the telephone lock was needed.

If someone was in it , you could kick the door really hard on the outside , and it would pop over the stoppa , trapping the person in it :) ,

New Years.

British Tradition.

On the stroke of midnight, people open the back door (to let the old year out) and ask the first dark haired man to be seen to come through the front door carrying salt, coal and bread. This means that the following year everyone in the house will have enough to eat (bread), enough money (salt) and be warm enough (coal).

 Anyone still do this?

Happy New Year to all at Desert Island hope you have a great 2019.

My Mam was always into that kind of stuff, she'd insist on my Dad being the first through the door after midnight every new year to bring the house good luck, it rarely worked!

Happy New Year to you as well ☺️

Even though these came out the 1950's it wasn't until the early 80's we had a twin tub(someone's pass down) mum use to struggle trying to get the thing out from under the counter.

White Arrow.

The days when parcel delivery was easy not like today's cowboys. Used by catalogue company's back in the day to deliver and collect returns. If you remember you had a white arrow card you placed in your window if you had a return, the guy would knock on/or if you was out you left on the door step, he would collect everyone's happy.  The good old days.

Using newspaper to draw/helping the fire catch hold.

The old man would use a big piece of newspaper placed over the fire to help it start going and as you sat there and hear the roar behind the paper you would start to see a burn mark in the middle of the paper.  Next thing it would catch fire and the old man would let it go up the chimney, only to have someone knock on and say your chimneys on fire.
