The only time I've hacked a video game's code was Player Manager on the ZX Spectrum to allow me to have 14 players on the pitch at once and add two zeros to my bank balance. BASIC FTW :D

I had to 'poke' my way through many Spectrum games, but in my defence many required pixel perfect jumps and had limited lives. Plus I was very young. No doubt the keyboard wasn't that responsive either. And my eyesight was garbage and that was probably not diagnosed til after.

Not that I'm making excuses or anything 😂

Aye, many a MERGE"" and POKE away.

At least one game made it easier with 6031769, a number lodged permanently in any true Speccy lover's brain.

Funny thing is, I can't remember if I ever completed it, if I did it certainly would have been with cheats 😂

I do still 'cheat' a little these days when emulating some old console stuff - but via save states, not actual 'cheats' - so more a case of being able to keep redoing tricky bits until I get them right, rather than giving myself invincibility, infinite lives, e.t.c.

I don't consider that cheating. It's simply something that should have been in the original game that we've had in PS3 games etc but they probably didn't have the capacity for back then. Back then you had things like the level codes for Lemmings, where I'd consider using level codes achieved by someone else as cheating.

Not sure if you know, but on the Spectrum, Kevin Toms Football Manager, during the highlights part, if the opposition had a chance, you hit break, so it would go to the basic command prompt, then you type, goto 292 and they don't score.

So once you went 1-0 up, you could just do the above and never lose. Or even if all the highlights were the opposition chances, you'd end up 0-0 doing the above.

I completed that particular game without knowing about that although I think I used infinite lives to do it. As I recall level 19 was a git time wise.

The Bank? Skylab Landing Bay was a lot harder imho.

Solar Power Generator - it wasn't that hard but you only just had time to do it. So waiting for any 'monster' to pass and pass back more than once would stuff you.

Ah yes, those rays of light were a nightmare.

On a similar subject, here's something to behold, a Jet Set Willy walkthrough. Guy actually does a commentary:

The cobra emulator is featured on a channel that also previews a couple of scorp6 emulations- this queen one seems to have issues but is getting there.

I’d say it has wrong sound or part sound roms everything else appears to Run including the inner video screen

Sound ROMs seem correct to me - I am guessing there is some issue with the feature board because the demo shows a collect immediately on entry - not even one press of start on the feature board.

There is a faint connection between the later Scorpion boards and Cobra 3, like pretty much every British manufacturer at that point they're all using some form of the Cold fire CPU, and making something very close to Pluto. It's why Betcoms got so weird, the hardware got close enough that with tiny adjustments you could run games built for one tech on another.

Betcom really where the tarts of the industry, didn't matter what the tech was they'd always put something in it.

They realised quite early on the benefits of a good HAL. Didn't some of the software guys become INNOV8 or is that wrong ?

Absolutely epic stuff! Although as I posted on his YT recently, my main interest in Scorpion 6 would be the potential for the latest Electrocoin lo-techs. Given that the older £25 ones don't quite run correctly on MFME (they soon lose track and go into a win-every-spin situation) - being able to run the Scorpion 6 versions would be incredible :)

I am surprised he chose the Queen machines to show his work off, simply as I'd be worried about copyright and whatnot from Queen 😂
