'newbie' Question - Electrocoin and Concept (and similar) in MFME

Sorry for asking, and I feel like a complete newbie, but here goes!

I love a bit of lo-tech action these days. I see that we have some decent Electrocoin machines that I enjoy - things like Bar X 7even. However these £25 era Electrocoin machines all seem to be running 3rd party Concept ROMs - so I assume the original Electrocoin ROMs don't work for some reason (protection?)

At the same time, I love the Concept £100 software on Magic 7 and suchlike - but can only see the £25 software on here. So I'm guessing the higher jackpots don't run? Is that also a protection issue, or is it something else?

Currently owned digitals : T7 Encore, T7 Original, Astra iPub and Storm Street Casino.

MFME cabinets : Genesis cab DIY by No1Stoney, Interplay conversion and Vegas Strip conversion (both are works in progress!)

Yes, Electocroins roms, don't run because of the copy protection.

I'm obviously no expert, but I remember being interested in what Concept and another word commonly used Chuzzy kits were.

The MPU Mecca, contains lots of threads, explaining what Concept roms and Chuzzy kits are. But IIRC, basically, I believe they are boards/roms, which enable, Electrocoin machines to do things, that Electrocoin roms can't do.

I've owned a Chuzzy and currently have a Concept but it's running Phoenix tech and doubt it's emultable.

Yeah, Chuzzy kits put different features into Electrocoin - things like extra nudges, whistles, streaks from Bar X O and a 'woo woo' noise. Oh they also allow a bonkers range of stake and prize options. I ran my Chuzzy Bar X (so only two possible wins) on £75 BAR and £25 XXX at £1 a play, but realistically they should be run at much lower stakes and prizes.

Concept ROMs are similar but typically - on the Bar X 7even, Magic 7 e.t.c. don't do whistles. The ones I sometimes play are the £100 jackpot upgrade kits - £10 XXX, £30 BAR and £100 777. I'd bloody love to run one of them in the emulator. There are some Concept £100s running in the emulator - Dance with the Devil being one. But find it odd there's no £100 Bar X upgrade running yet :)

I believe the chuzzy kit connects directly to the cpu socket on the Phoenix board and encrypts and decrypts the game on the daughter board as part of the protection, without the chuzzy board the game doesn’t run, Chris didn’t get around to cracking the encryption sadly.

Ah, I never had a Chuzzy on Phoenix, only on the older boards with the Jamma type connections. In those instances I seem to recall the Chuzzy kit was installed in two sockets - one of which I think was the original z80 game CPU, the other I'm not sure... could have been a secondary CPU for sound, or could have been a PROM socket. But it was installed in, and stretched across two sockets, and you mounted the original CPU on the Chuzzy board. I think it had a rotary switch for game versions - 2 win (Bar X), 3 win (Bar X 7even, Magic 7, Magic 10) or 4 win (Red Bar, Big 7). It did so much all on one board. Wish I hadn't sold it now!!

The Phoenix is a weird beast. My machine is the newer Phoenix, the game is Go For Gold. Interesting machine, a bit less volatile than the normal Concept Bar X 7evens and whatnot.

Anyway the Concept upgrade to the Phoenix board involves a higher speed CPU, among other things, but nothing bonkers looking. Pretty simple looking mods really.
