  1. Those you have been around a long time, may be aware, that earlier versions of 9.4.9.9 10.1a were leaked, I was given them, I passed them out. Earlier versions were leaked by others. Chris knew this. So when he asked for beta testers I thought he's going to still think we're cunts and ignore me. But he didn't, he seamed this new MFME as a rebirth and everything under the bridge. Big man to say that. This were the first build with the new DX draw code, so I stuck to one tech only to test. SC5. My playing showed, with a help from the debug sysyem load, that it was way too high, causing slowdowns on SC5 and especially SC5 Adder video. Leave it with him, day later, try this. All fixed. Other than a few coding chats about reverse engineering, never got to know him. Some of us are vocal about what we do, where we're from, jobs, kids or whatever. He nenver seemed to boast or want the limelight. He seemed to be a very private man, and I respect that. That's my little write up, not a great believer myself, but if we ever do meet up again, just make sure you've lots of £4.80 tokens..or are the machines up there also have unemptiable hoppers and tubes!? ..

  2. Nice post, very true, I too was asked to beta tester and we had a lot of communication between us from then on in particular. I think, although it took a while to realise, those who were perhaps seen as just troublemaking in the past, were actually amongst the most enthusiastic for the FME scene. The trouble was, we just had different ideas of how things should move forwards and got off on the wrong foot and kept on tripping up. I see many of us now some 18 years + in the scene, a bit like the youngsters now only wanting the £70 or later machines only and impossible machines such as machines driven by their own PC's. Us seen troublemakers, just wanted the latest £10/ £15 machines and just didn't get the bigger picture of patience in a virtue. I'm sure there was regret on both sides (I know I have several), but the main thing is we got there in the end and I think due to Chris working on the emulator privately for a number of years, those years weren't a loss. It was just several years without an emulator update, but when it came, boy was it the best update ever.

  3. Chris gave me a copy of v19.9 before it was released, in fact i think it went on to be v20 before he actually released it. It was at the the time I was doing Pool Play (Electro) and had found some bugs in the current version. For a tech that nobody seemed to bother with he fixed the bugs and incorporated a whole raft of other improvements to the EM Editor. Sure we had some arguments about how some manufactures in the real world switched the 0v, often being a little sulky and refusing to believe me but next day the bugs were fixed and all was good. He could at times be a little short with you but deep down took on board what you had said. He cared and was passionate about what he did, and it had to be right. I asked him lots of times for a peek into the source code so that I could have a nose around to see how he actually achieved what he did with the EM side but that request was always firmly ignored.

  4. This has been requested quite a few times via comments on YouTube and PMs here and elsewhere, and I'm nothing if not amenable to finally getting around to doing something after months of prevarication and eventually feeling slightly guilty that I haven't done it yet.

  15. Another RAM location of interest: 4007f1 This is where the game records the active location on the board. It doesn't need a write breakpoint, instead you can write to it at any time, and the next number reel value will move the board on relative from the value set at 4007f1. Positions run from 00 to 27 (hex). If you poke in 27 or higher then it will just give Ark of the Covenant immediately. If you then combine this with poking the number reel value (401d6f) to 0 (with the write breakpoint set on either 401d6f or 401d6c) then you can move to whichever square you want on the board (forwards or backwards) at anytime, but remember the values are in hex, so 09, 0A, 0B, 0C, 0D, 0E, 0F, 10 etc. In summary these are the RAM locations I found: 401d6f Value of number reel * use a write breakpoint on feature board. (breakpoint may need to set as 401d6c) (valid values: 01 to 0f) 4002df Amount of nudges remaining when awarded them in normal reel play (valid values: 01 to 0f) (just repeat writing values if you need more as you use them) 4007f1 Current position on feature board (valid values: 00 to 27) Note: If anyone can work out how to clear the bullets from the gun, or what location stores the amount of them that would be really useful. I still can't find them and have given up on it. Appreciate some will think wtf is this, why bother, but it's just about being inquisitive and a challenge to control a game. I appreciate this could not have been done in real life and is simply a curiosity available to us when using the emulator and nothing more. Think of it like cheats in MAME or infinite lives pokes from the 8-bit days etc.

  18. Here are the best pictures I have for Reno Reels. These might be the same images you had. I'll attach them here just in case they weren't the same images you had. I think I had them from an EBAY auction some time ago. Can't remember. Reno Reel Images.zip

  20. Great video Choppers. I'll post some personal thoughts on these machines if I may as time allows. For this post Inferno - This is definitely the most brutal of the three machines you reviewed in terms of feature frequency and bad mood but certainly not the most brutal Maygay by any stretch - there are some real horrors like Instant Win where it can take £20 to land on anything. Inferno is also up there with the best Maygays of this era in terms of a large win dump. Big Money can indeed go big, £20+ when it wants from a single feature which at the time when you were on a £3/£6 win selector was very satisfying! Definitely not as satisfying as Super Jackpot from Mystery Guest on Noels House Party which was probably the biggest successive credit dump there was during the Maygay £6 era - JP + 5 repeats being my personal record for £36. I am sure others may have done even better. The best way to Big Money is to high/low up the middle as there is probably only about a 5-10% chance of getting past the top corner naturally. When it's in a good mood you can high low up the middle practically every feature until the value is taken. I have high-low gambled all the way from Step to nearest win many times. Also the gamble on reel wins doesn't cheat. The number appears predetermined and if you choose right it won't reverse it. So if it is behind percentage or in a bad mood you can second guess it and go higher on 11 for JP for example. My most ridiculous high low was going from cherries up to JP where I went higher than 9 on bells to 10, higher than 10 on single bars to double, and higher than 11 on double bars to JP. I don't know if it is predetermined on the high-low climb to Big Money as well, I could test this in a virtual machine with saved state but know from gameplay that the reel wins high-low is good. I always take the cashpot if on £3. It doesn't appear to affect the value or feature frequency. If a JP is offered anywhere on the board I always take it because if I don't it's almost certain to bin me off. I don't think this was around on 20p/£6 for long. Every machine I ever saw in the wild was on 5p play and even then I didn't see many at all. Interestingly this machine is one of the few times I have had a fruit machine confuse itself and get into an unresolvable programmatic state. The situation in question was a skill stop "matrix add" on a bonus where I only needed one extra fireball to fill the matrix. Unfortunately the machine decided that my bonus was two symbols to add to the matrix but after the first one couldn't see that the matrix was already full and tried to force the second symbol on me which was impossible. Cue the ringing matrix add sample playing indefinitely with the matrix full and no way to proceed. Called the arcade engineer over, all they could do was turn it off and on. Of course when it came back on, no feature. Quite annoying as I remember it took about £12 to get to that state on 5p play! In terms of the layout for those with an interest in FME history this machine was originally completed from some flash burned photos of a 5p machine hence all the trail values had to be changed as they were incorrect. Think difference between a blue and red Pink Panther and you will get the idea. Each incorrect trail number was rebuilt from scratch using the original font (which I think was "Machine" as used on Gladiators) and colour gradient matched using either Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, can't remember which. Now that I have told you that you can probably see a slight quality difference between the numbers on the trail and the rest of the trail. On later layouts if a small replacement or new decal had to be created I learned to use the "add grain" function which makes the object look less drawn and more natural scan/pic like. In fact thinking about I *think* this was only my second ever DX and I had zero graphic experience when I started out so I was quite pleased with the outcome at the time - but clearly Wild Zone after five years practice was immeasurably better! Some horrors on this layout as well like the bent red bars on the Gladiators machine to the side - still we all started somewhere! What happened to the right hand machines in your video? Does the new emulator cut these off or did you trim yourself? Nice you touched on the 1280 debate in the video. Going to 1280 was certainly controversial at the time but absolutely the right decision. 1024 was just too restricting and lacking in detail. Still it seems to be the right decision now given that many years later there are now 4K layouts being released!

  21. The only picture we have for DAF is the club version, so obviously it won't be that. Not sure if there was an AWP version of it.
